Open Source Science: Generative Computing

Explore generative computing with IBM Research in Dublin on 24 September 2026 through technical talks, live coding, open-source examples and discussion. ## From prompts to predictable programs Held from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at Trinity College Dublin Business School, this second Open Source Science Dublin meetup examines how scientific research, AI and cloud-native infrastructure intersect with open-source technology. The central theme is Generative Computing: writing programs that call models in much the same way they call functions, while applying familiar software expectations around structure, testability and governance. Rather than treating LLM interactions as ad-hoc prompts embedded in application code, the speakers will explore how model calls can become typed, composable, verifiable and governable program elements. ## Talks and practical examples The programme includes technical deep dives from IBM Research, with one additional talk still to be announced: - Generative Computing with Mellea: Programs That Call Models Like Functions , Rahul Nair introduces Mellea, an open-source Python library for predictable generative programs. The session covers instructions, requirements, sampling strategies and verifiers, supported by live coding and examples of how Mellea works with the wider Python ecosystem. - FactReasoner: Porting a Probabilistic Factuality Assessor to Mellea , Radu Marinescu presents FactReasoner, IBM’s system for assessing the factuality of long-form generated text. Expect a practical account of its move from a bespoke implementation to Mellea, including resulting reliability improvements and speedups. Attendees can also read the associated research paper. - The Mellea Skills Compiler: From Plain-Language Specs to Governed Pipelines , an IBM Research speaker will demonstrate the Mellea Skills Compiler, which turns plain-language skill specifications into governed generative pipelines with evaluation harnesses, requirement checks and provenance.
