We’re getting together for another small-format AI roundtable over lunch. Chris Swenor will lead the conversation, and this month we’re digging into a question that’s becoming increasingly relevant as open-source AI models continue to improve: When does it make sense to use an open-source model—and when doesn’t it? Chris framed the discussion this way: “Open source models have always been the right call for certain jobs, and the set of jobs keeps getting bigger. This roundtable is about where that line sits now: what you gain in control, cost, and privacy, what you give up in raw capability, and what it actually takes to keep one running well. We’ll trade notes on where people have made the switch, where they’ve regretted it, and how to tell the difference before you commit. Come with whatever you’re wrestling with, whether you’re already running models in house or still working out if you should.” As always, no presentations and no sales pitches. This is meant to be a real conversation around the table—what people are building, what they’re experimenting with, what’s working, and what they’ve learned the hard way. You don’t need to be running your own models to participate.
