The Data Assimilation & Machine Learning conference will take place from March 16 to March 20, 2026, at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in Reading, United States. This event will gather leading experts, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of data assimilation and machine learning to explore the latest advancements and methodologies. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in insightful discussions, participate in workshops, and network with peers who share a passion for harnessing machine learning techniques to enhance data assimilation processes.
Highlights
Five-day course focusing on Data Assimilation (DA) methods and assimilating observations. Introduction to Machine Learning techniques in the DA workflow. Hands-on sessions and discussions included. Topics: Optimal Interpolation, 3D-Var, 4D-Var, Kalman filter, Ensemble Kalman Filter methods. Exploration of error covariances and handling non-Gaussian errors. Use of satellite observations in the global observing system. Bias correction, quality control, and diagnostics. Applications in land surface, ocean, atmospheric composition, and reanalysis. Participants should have a good meteorological and mathematical background. All lectures are given in English.
