AI for the Working Mathematician

AI for the Working Mathematician is a three-day ICMS workshop in [Edinburgh](https://www.createwith.com/cities/edinburgh), running 14–16 December 2026 at the Bayes Centre. It will examine how AI is changing mathematical research, from automated theorem proving and formalisation to conjecture generation and the analysis of large mathematical datasets. ## Mathematics meets artificial intelligence Recent foundation models have produced powerful systems for mathematical reasoning, while machine learning is revealing previously hidden structures in mathematical data, including phenomena such as elliptic curve murmurations. This workshop creates a focused setting in which academic and industry researchers can evaluate these advances, demonstrate emerging technologies and discuss where current methods still fall short. The programme will explore areas including: - Theorem proving and AI-assisted mathematical reasoning - Automated formalisation using proof assistants such as Lean - AI-supported conjecture generation - Machine learning for large mathematical datasets - Tools for scientific discovery, including DeepMind’s AlphaEvolve and Axiom Maths’ Axolver and Axplorer - The opportunities and limitations of current AI systems for mathematics ## Talks and collaborative working groups Alongside invited talks, attendees will take part in specialist working groups addressing technical challenges and collaborative projects. These sessions are intended to help participants develop new approaches, identify shared problems and initiate joint research,not simply observe demonstrations. The mix of presentations and focused group work makes this a particularly relevant event for people actively investigating how AI can contribute to mathematical practice. The workshop is aimed at researchers and practitioners working across **mathematics, computer science and industry**.
