AI for SMEs: A Practical Introduction

A free, practical 3-hour workshop for SMEs who are based at or a client (Virtual/Flex) of The Media Centre Delivered by: Professor Richard Hill BEng MSc PhD MBA CEng FIET CMgr FCMI PFHEA SMIEEE NTF Professor of Intelligent Systems University of Huddersfield AI is developing quickly, but separating genuinely useful opportunities from the hype isn’t always easy. This hands-on workshop is designed for people working in small and medium-sized businesses who want to understand what AI can actually do, how to use it responsibly, and how it might help with everyday work. No technical knowledge or previous experience with AI is required. We’ll cut through some of the myths and jargon, explore the strengths and limitations of tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, and look at practical ways of getting better results from them. During the session, you will: • understand what generative AI is — and what it isn’t; • explore where AI can genuinely help in an SME; • learn the important limitations, risks and responsibilities when using AI at work; • discover simple techniques for writing better prompts and getting more useful results; • try practical examples for tasks such as researching, analysing information, generating ideas, drafting and improving documents; and • identify opportunities where AI could save time or improve the way work gets done in your own organisation. This is a hands-on workshop and you’ll work through practical exercises on your own laptop and leave with techniques you can start using immediately. Who is it for? Business owners, managers and employees in SMEs who are curious about AI and want a practical, balanced introduction. Bring a laptop or tablet where you will be able to access an AI provider via browser or application, and come prepared to experiment. No previous AI experience is necessary. Duration: 3 hours
