AI for Research Day 2026

AI for Research Day 2026 brings practical AI insights, hands-on workshops and cross-disciplinary networking to University of Sheffield researchers on 1 October. Taking place from 9:00am to 4:30pm at INOX in the Students’ Union Building, this one-day conference explores AI for Research That Matters. Led by the Centre for Machine Intelligence, it will show how researchers across different disciplines are already putting artificial intelligence to work, and help attendees identify where AI could fit into their own projects. What to expect The day combines strategic perspectives, real research examples and practical learning: Morning sessions: keynote talks, a panel discussion and presentations from University of Sheffield researchers alongside industry experts from Dell and NVIDIA. Afternoon workshops: hands-on, interactive sessions offering a practical starting point for applying AI tools and techniques within research. Networking: dedicated opportunities to meet researchers from across the disciplines and connect with the University’s research support community. Rather than focusing only on theory, the programme is designed to give attendees a clearer sense of how AI can support their work and the practical experience needed to take a next step. The mix of talks, discussion and workshops also creates space to examine AI from multiple disciplinary perspectives. Who should attend? The event is open to all University of Sheffield researchers, including postgraduate researchers, early-career researchers and established academics, as well as Professional Services colleagues. It is particularly relevant to people who are curious about AI but have not yet incorporated it into their research. Researchers already using AI tools and methods will also find opportunities to learn from peers, hear industry perspectives and make new connections.
