Pamela Samuelson, a distinguished professor of law at UC Berkeley, will discuss the legal challenges posed by generative AI technologies. The talk focuses on the copyright implications and fair use defenses in the context of generative AI. Currently, 35 lawsuits in the U.S. and 2 in Canada are challenging the legality of using in-copyright works to train generative AI models. Judicial analyses are expected to center on fair use/fair dealing defenses. Samuelson will explain the issues judges have decided so far and those yet to be addressed. The broader impacts of these lawsuits on academic research and development will be discussed. Plaintiffs are seeking large damage awards and some are seeking court orders to destroy models trained on their data. The event is part of the SRI Seminar Series at the University of Toronto. Samuelson is co-director of the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology and a recognized pioneer in digital copyright law. The seminar will be moderated by Lisa Austin.
