AI as a Scholarly Partner

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how universities conduct research, teach, communicate knowledge and engage with governments and communities. This interactive workshop moves beyond “prompt engineering” to develop responsible AI literacy grounded in the University of Manitoba's AI Guiding Principles and the Centre for Social Science Research and Policy's commitment to applied research, methodological rigour, policy engagement and knowledge mobilization. Participants will explore how AI can augment—rather than replace—human scholarship while examining privacy, research ethics, copyright, Indigenous knowledge, bias, verification, academic integrity and public-policy risks. The second half of the workshop becomes a hands-on laboratory in which participants test AI tools against authentic academic and professional tasks.
